Kewaunee High School's 100 percent graduation rate and five of its students were recognized during Gov. Scott Walker's State of the State address Tuesday.

The students – Abby Joski, Rachel Dax, Tyler Reckelberg, Zach Baumgartner and J.J. Vollenweider – were asked by the governor to attend after participating in a town hall style meeting he held last Thursday in Kewaunee.

Kewaunee School District Superintendent Karen Treml and Kewaunee High School Principal Mike Holtz accompanied the students to Madison.

"My understanding was that he was very impressed with them during the listening sessions," said state Rep. Joel Kitchens, R-Sturgeon Bay, who met with the students when they arrived at the Capitol..

"We are very honored," said Treml.

"It's nice to be recognized as a school," said Holtz.  "It represents all the work of our teachers and support staff and the work of our students,"

The students and faculty left for the event Tuesday morning and returned to Kewaunee about 11 p.m., Holtz said.

"After the speech, they talked about what they thought was cool and some of the things they were surprised at," said Holtz.

"What I think was most amazing about this opportunity was meeting the people who work so hard to keep this state moving forward," Joski said.  "Everyone who attended the address was very passionate about creating a great state."

"I thought the experience was very different than anything I ever experienced before," Dax said.  "It really made us pay attention to what is going on throughout the state of Wisconsin."

"It was a very neat experience," Reckelberg said. "I never would have thought I would have been picked to be a part of going to the address. If I could do it again, I would."

J.J. Vollenweider agreed that he would do it again.

"It was fun to see the crowd's reaction to what the governor said in his speech," he said.  "There was lots of clapping!.  It was also very nice to be seen on TV when the governor called us out."
