Kewaunee windstorm was weak tornado

A windstorm that uprooted trees and damaged homes and boats in Kewaunee on Saturday morning, Aug. 20, has been categorized as a weak tornado by the National Weather Service (NWS).

Officially categorized as an EF0 tornado – the least powerful storm on a scale from zero to 5 – the tornado damaged at least 100 trees and caused minor damage to several homes. Several large trees were uprooted in very wet soil. Strong straight-line winds of up to 51 mph were also reported near the shore as the storm moved through.

The storm cut a narrow path from near the intersection of Fifth and Lincoln streets northeast to Second and Miller, from approximately 10:03 to 10:06 a.m., according to the NWS bulletin.

The city of Kewaunee asked residents whose house and/or business suffered damage from the storm to email City Hall at admin@cityofkewaunee.org or call 920-388-5000 and provide their name, house address and telephone number. The city was collecting information for disaster reporting.

City officials noted that residents' first call should be to their insurance agent.
