Kinnard Farms to host Ag Career Days for Kewaunee County students

CASCO - Seventh-, eighth- and ninth-grade students from the Algoma, Denmark, Kewaunee, Luxemburg-Casco and Southern Door school districts are slated to take part in Ag Career Days on Oct 17 and 18 at Kinnard Farms.

Co-sponsored by the Kewaunee County Economic Development Corp. (KCEDC) and Northeast Wisconsin Technical College, the two-day event is intended to showcase a variety of careers in the agriculture industry and help the students begin to identify how their interests relate to potential future careers. It's also meant to reaffirm the significant role agriculture plays in both the local and national economies.

"It's extremely important to the county to showcase agricultural careers. We're such a rural area," said Lynn Kroll, KCEDC board spokesperson.

The careers to be highlighted in Ag Career Days vary widely, from traditional roles like agronomy, milk testing, cheese making, cropping, animal nutrition and agriculture support services to newer ones like robotics, business management and technology. Students also take a tour of Kinnard Farms, which is hosting the event for the first time.

Another first, Kroll said, is a soil pit that will be featured. An expert will discuss different types of soils and soil management, which in the past several years has been of major interest across the county.

“We're highlighting so many tech jobs, not just the typical jobs you think you have on a farm," Kroll said.

Kroll also noted the numerous agricultural industry-related local and regional sponsors for the event in a press release, from farms and feed mills to banks and equipment suppliers.

“We’re excited by the support the agricultural community has continued to show for this event.” Kroll said in the press release.
