Korean vet receives last medal from grandson

Adam Whiting V.F.W., U. S. Marine was concerned that his grandfather, John Presslein, had not received all of his medals from his military service in the Korean War.

After looking into archives to  find John's military service record, he noted that his grandfather should have received the Korean War conflict medal.

While the family was at a wedding in Florida this summer, Whiting arranged for his grandfather to receive the award at a military base near St. Augustine.

Three generations of the family had served in the military beginning with John, said his son, Dan Presslein, who owns the Algoma Car Wash.   Dan said his parents spent their summers in Algoma for many years, but now live in Florida..

"So we all got our uniforms out and wore them to the medal presentation ceremony," said Dan, who served in the U.S. Coast Guard auxilliary.

John, who is now 81, received the last medal he had earned while serving in the Army from 1956 to 1958. It was presented to him by Adam, which made the ceremony very special, said Dan.

"The grandsons enjoy comparing their time in military service with their time helping grandpa at the Algoma Car Wash," said Dan.
