L-C breaks ground on Primary School improvement project

LUXEMBURG - The Luxemburg-Casco School District held a groundbreaking ceremony last Friday, Oct. 19, at L-C Primary School for the first improvement project resulting from two referendums passed by voters in the district.

The initial project focuses on student safety at the primary school, 601 Marcks Lane. The building will have a relocated main entrance with shatter-resistant film on its windows and glass.

The project also will provide additional classroom space for the district’s growing 4K program. It is scheduled for completion by the start of the 2019-20 school year,

“This is an exciting moment for our community,” School District Sup. Glenn Schlender said in a press release.  “Student safety is of paramount concern to parents in the district and to our staff.  This project, and the security improvements it provides, will ensure a high level of safety.  We are appreciative that voters saw the importance of implementing these changes.”

Joining Schlender at the ceremony were L-C School Board President Mike Driedric; Jeff Mangan of Nexus Solutions, the project's facilities planner; PTA President Tracy Bahn; Principal Pete Kline; school resource officers Nia DuBois and Dana Schopf; and other school board members.

The two referendums that approved funding the projects were part of the April 3 elections.

The first question asked for up to $15.9 million for remodeling or additions to the primary, intermediate and high schools and updating classroom technology, along with other uses. Among the improvements is construction of a three full-court gymnasium, space adjacent to the new gym where larger events can be held, a public workout area with changing facilities, and new space for the wrestling program. It passed by a healthy margin, 1,730 to 925 (66 to 34 percent).

The second question sought up to $11.9 million to build a new middle school at the south end of the current high school. It also passed, 1,436 to 1,211 (54 to 46 percent).

The projects are the result of a long-range facilities plan initially undertaken by school district in the spring of 2015 with subsequent input from the community.
