The host Luxemburg-Casco girls cross-country team led all Division 1 teams in the 45th annual Russ Fameree Invitational, held Oct. 9 at NorthBrook Country Club in Luxemburg.
Junior Jacie Legois won the girls varsity race, and the Spartans’ top five runners all finished in the top 20 to pace the 11 larger schools who participated.
Kewaunee duplicated that feat to win the Division 2 race, with senior Amanda Vandenplas leading the squad in second place. Reedsville’s Faith Lubner placed first, and Algoma freshman Liberty Ansorge placed third, although the Wolves ran with an incomplete squad.
The Spartans boys finished in third place behind Two Rivers and Freedom. Senior Corey Legois paced L-C with a ninth-place finish, just behind Harold Iwen of Algoma in eighth.
"It was a beautiful day for running at the 45th annual Russ Fameree Invite," said Justin Short, L-C varsity coach. "This past week was our toughest of the season in terms of training, so I was pleased to see so many runners have great individual performances."
Short said the varsity girls faced stiff competition from Freedom and Two Rivers.
"It was a good preview for the conference meet where we will see Freedom and sectionals where we will see Two Rivers," Short said. "The girls really worked well together. All season long we have been working on finding our teammates during the race and pushing each other to be better every meet."
Russ Fameree, former L-C head coach, comes every year and hands out the medals to all the runners at the awards ceremony, Short said.
"We had all the head coaches of the past 45 years --Fameree, Mary Annoye, Ron VanderMeuse and myself -- present this year to help hand out awards," he said.
