LUXEMBURG – The Luxemburg-Casco boys, under new head coach Logan VanderVelden, kicked off the 2023-24 campaign with a 69-52 victory over Marinette on Tuesday, Nov. 28 at home. The Spartans, behind solid play on both sides of the ball, jumped out to a 27-16 point lead at halftime and then endured a second half run by the Marines to preserve the lead and take the victory. “For the most part, they’re responding well,” said L-C Coach VanderVelden when asked what he thought of the team’s performance under a completely new system. “There are still a lot of things we’ve got to work on. I think we can finish a little bit better, be a little more patient on offense. It’s our first game and I could tell they were starting to run out of gas a little bit. That’s to be expected. We’ve just got to keep working. We played well but I know we can play better.” L-C had four players register double-digit points. Lance Cherovsky paced the team with 15 points, followed by Josh Parins with 14. Steelen Olson had 12 and Jacob Coisman turned in 11. MANITOWOC – The Kewaunee High boys were up 30-22 at halftime in the season opener against Manitowoc Lutheran but couldn’t hold on as the Lancers went on to defend their home court with a 60-56 win. The Storm were led by a fantastic individual performance from Thomas Stangel, who led all scorers with 33 points. Braxton Riha added nine, Christopher Cullen and Avery Jerabek each had six and Connor Kilgore chipped in two. ALGOMA – The Algoma Wolves will be looking to record their first victory of the season on the road against Green Bay NEW Lutheran after a 69-38 opening-night loss against Two Rivers. The Wolves found themselves behind 36-22 at the break and couldn’t recover. Parker Lischka was Algoma’s top scorer with 19 points, followed by Grant Vandervest with eight. Chase Romdenne had five points for the Wolves while Cody Kirchman and Braeden Leist each had three.
