L-C wrestlers win Battle on the Bay

Luxemburg-Casco senior Calvin Henderson’s bold warning after an 18-point team loss to Bay Port proved prophetic Saturday as the Spartans won the 20th annual Battle on the Bay championship at Bay Port High School.

The Spartans went 4-1 Dec. 6 in their own invitational, the lone blemish coming in a surprising 46-28 loss to Bay Port.

“A lot of the matches we lost, I know we could have won,” Henderson said. “A lot of them came down to the wire. I think we’re coming back for something big when we face them again. I don’t think they’re ready for Battle on the Bay.”
Boy, was he right.

It came down to the championship final match at 215, where Henderson won by major decision 10-2, securing the team title in the 25-team invitational. Jerry Van Ess, who supplied the numbers, said it was the team’s ninth championship in the tournament’s history.

The Spartans totaled 454 points, two more than St. Croix Falls. Bay Port was a distant third with 389, followed by Mukwonago, Slinger, Kewaskum and Wausau West.

Joseph Jeanquart (138) and Carson Neubert (144) also won championships.

Linken Bastien placed second at 150, while Logan Ellwanger was fourth with a 3-2 record at 175, and Mason Boulanger and Josiah Bastien each fifth with 4-1 marks at 157 and 165, respectively.

Meanwhile, the Spartans beat Clintonville 82-0 and Waupaca 76-6 in a triangular meet last Thursday.

Georgel first, Gauthier third at Brillion wrestling invitational

Luxemburg-Casco’s Kiley Georgel pinned her way to the title in the 235 weight class at the Brillion Invitational Saturday. Teammate Jakayla Steinhorst went 4-1 and took second at 100 pounds.

On the boys side, Kewaunee’s Trevor Gauthier placed third. He went 4-1 on the day, pinning his way to the semifinals where he lost, 7-5, before winning the third place match by technical fall, 18-2.
