Abigail Kolstad, an 11-year-old 5th grader at Luxemburg-Casco Intermediate School, is the first girl at L-C to bring home a state wrestling championship.
Last weekend, she competed in the Wisconsin Wrestling Federation Kids Folkstyle State Championship at the Alliant Center in Madison, winning the 105-pound weight class among girls born in 2015 or 2016.
With 889 girls in total, it was the largest girls wrestling competition in Wisconsin history. Only kids from second to eighth grade could compete.
Kolstad’s mom Katie said her daughter’s bracket consisted of 22 wrestlers.
Abigail won her first match 9-8, her second with a pin in 1:13, her third with a pin in 0:56 and the championship match with a pin in 1:42.
“She spent the year leading up to state wrestling on the L-C middle school team,” Katie Kolstad said. “She’s in fifth grade, and spent most of the year going up against seventh and eighth graders — boys and girls. This only made her better, and definitely helped her win the championship this year.”
The L-C Wrestling Club sent 26 youth wrestlers to state. All had to qualify at one of eight regional tournaments, which included Bay Port, where Kolstad placed first. Ten of the 26 L-C entrants placed at state — seven boys and three girls.
Jaxon Eisch and Calin Kollross also won championships. Carl Matz placed third, Sara Ortega and Jordy Routhieaux fourth, Chase Alexander fifth, and Hadley Lange, Ryker DuChateau and Blake DeGrave all sixth.
