Kewaunee County-based artists Randall Dettman of Algoma and Stephanie Holznecht of Luxemburg had work selected to be part of the 42nd Juried Annual exhibit opening Sept. 9 at the Miller Art Museum in Sturgeon Bay.

The public is invited to meet the artists at the opening reception, scheduled for 5 to 6:30 p.m. Sept. 9, with eight cash awards for the exhibit announced at 5:30 p.m.

Forty-seven works of art by artists from six counties in eastern Wisconsin were juried into the show.

Each year, artists ages 18 and older are able to submit up to two works in two-dimensional media to the jury for this competitive exhibit. The exhibit traditionally has been open to artists in the Northeast Wisconsin counties of Brown, Door, Kewaunee, Manitowoc and Oconto, but this year the eligible geographic area of residency was expanded to include Sheboygan County.

More than 90 artists entered nearly 170 submissions. From those, 47 works created by 42 artists were chosen. The exhibit includes paintings, drawings, photographs, pastels, digital imagery and mixed-media works.

The jury was made up of Dan Cross, artist and director/owner of Idea Gallery in Egg Harbor; Joye Moon of Oshkosh, an accomplished watercolor artist and teacher; and Leslie Walfish, director of the Karl Priebe Gallery and faculty member at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh.

“As jurors, mastery of the medium is a given," Cross said about the selection process. "We wanted work that showed something beyond the ordinary."

The 42nd Juried Annual is on exhibit from Sept. 9 through Oct. 30 at the Miller Art Museum, inside Door County Library, 107 S. Fourth Ave., Sturgeon Bay. Regular hours are from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Mondays and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays. Admission is free and the museum is fully accessible. Two public programs at the museum are scheduled in conjunction with the exhibit: “Selected Artists of Door County” by Virginia Jones Maher at 10:30 a.m. Sept. 14; and “A Conversation with the Jurors” at 10:30 a.m. Oct. 12.
