Local instructor aims to help senior citizens thrive

Posted

LUXEMBURG – Every Monday morning, the sound of upbeat music and friendly laughter fills St John Lutheran Church in Luxemburg as local senior citizens gather for a workout led by Diane Dorner. The class offers older adults a fun, safe and encouraging way to stay active, social and strong.

Dorner is an instructor who’s been teaching senior exercise for 13 years
“Exercise isn’t just about fitness,” Dorner said. “It’s about maintaining independence, improving balance and feeling good — both physically and mentally.”

The class focuses on gentle, low-impact movements designed to improve flexibility, strength, coordination and balance. Using resistance bands, light weights and chairs for support, participants move through carefully planned routines that are adaptable for all fitness levels.

Many regular attendees say the class has made a big difference in their daily life. Beyond physical benefits, the class has become a social outlet for many seniors who look forward to connecting with their peers. After each session, it’s common to see participants stay for coffee, snacks and conversation while there are informative speakers

“Community is just as important as exercise,” Dorner said. “When people feel supported and included, they’re more likely to keep moving and stay healthy.”

The class is open to anyone aged 55 and older, with no experience required. Sessions are held at St John Lutheran Church, 700 Heritage St., Luxemburg, on Mondays from 9-10 a.m. New participants are always welcome. For more information, contact Dorner at 920-609-2765.
