Local retired educators attend statewide event

LUXEMBURG – The Wisconsin Retired Educators’ Association (WREA) met on May 7 at Turner Hall in Monroe for their spring regional event with the theme of Planting, Growing and Blooming for WREA’s Success.

Four members of the Door-Kewaunee Retired Educators’ Association (DKREA) attended the meeting: Jan Schmitz, Jesse Harness, Vonnie Harness and Ellen Mathu.

Attendees discussed their shared — and varied — experiences, and WREA Foundation Challenge Award winners from Wisconsin elementary schools were showcased, highlighting their innovative projects. From the Northeast Wisconsin region (Region II), the $2,000 winner was Fond du Lac Elementary School for its project, “Wordology for the World.” Elementary educator Heather Meir developed the project.

DKREA meets over lunch four times each year followed by speaker presentations or activities. Members help support a scholarship fund, provide school supplies to area elementary schools, recognize all public school staff members during Teacher Appreciation Week in May and participate in a highway clean-up project.

Retired educators living in Door and Kewaunee counties interested in joining WREA or the local chapter DKREA can contact Jesse Harness at (715) 505-0649 or via email at jyharness@gmail.com.
