I want to give a shout-out to Maynard Lufter of Kewaunee, who reaches the century mark this weekend. Happy Birthday, Maynard, and many, many more. I hope you really celebrate this milestone. So all you readers out there, if you see Maynard this weekend, wish him a very happy birthday.
► The Milwaukee Brewers have been on a hot streak lately. Will it last? Only time will answer that.
I watched them win a good one on Sunday and hope it continues. As of Tuesday, they are in first place in the National League's Central Division. Now, whether or not they will continue at that pace is the question. But they have been a lot more fun to watch lately.
Winning always makes it more enjoyable for fans. Hopefully, the Brew Crew will make the playoffs and right now, it's looking good. The team just has to keep it going.
In a couple of weeks, the Green Bay Packers get back to work. And with any luck, the team won't have as many injuries as last year. But whatever will be, will be.
► This Saturday is the Veterans' Car Show in downtown Kewaunee, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. If you appreciate old antique vehicles, you will love this show.
These vehicles prove that Americans love their vehicles and show them a lot of tender loving care. I wonder if anyone will have a 1950 Ford in the show. That's the car we had when I learned how to drive. Of course, that was back in the late '50s, a totally different time in Kewaunee and a heck of a long time ago.
And it was a stick shift to boot. I would be willing to bet that most new drivers today wouldn't know how to operate one of those.
► Did you hear this one? It's from the internet and was published in Readers' Digest, sent in by Mark Forman of Berkeley Heights, New Jersey.
To get a young man to write to her even once, his aunt resorted to sending him a check with the note, “Do not cash until you write me a thank-you.”
A few weeks later, the check had cleared, yet no message had arrived. So she called him. “I told you not to cash the check until you’d written to thank me,” she complained.
“I didn’t cash the check,” he said. “I deposited it.”
It's really strange that there are people who really think that way and, worse yet, they probably vote, too. That's scary. But there isn't a solution, so I will be quiet about that from now on.
Have a great summer weekend, everyone. Hope the weather holds, but I heard we may get some rain. Have a great week, everyone.
