Ludlow: March is here, but winter hasn't left

Whatever happened to spring?

Just when we thought Old Man Winter was on his way out, back he comes with a vengeance to dump a boatload of snow on us Tuesday. With any luck, it won't last long. But this is Wisconsin and weather happens. It certainly is never boring.

Speaking of not boring, many of us women bowlers are headed to Green Bay this weekend for the women's state bowling tournament.

We go every year. I don't think I've missed many since I moved back to this area almost 50 years ago. It's in a different location every year and I believe it's one of the largest women's state tourneys in the nation. And we always stay overnight, regardless of where it is.

I do prefer playing golf, but if you live here, that's pretty much impossible to do in winter, so we bowl. I used to be fairly decent at it, until my body went to pot. But I still keep trying, even though my skills have deteriorated considerably.

As we age, it seems we don't do anything as well as we used to, but I'm thankful that I'm still able to participate at all. It's fun to get together with everyone and have a good time. That's what it's all about, the camaraderie.

» I found some cute answering machine messages on the internet this morning. Some of them are as follows:

"Hi. This is John. If you are the phone company, I already sent the money. If you are my parents, please send me money. If you are my financial institution, you didn’t lend me enough money. If you are my friends, you owe me money. If you are a female, don’t worry – I have plenty of money."

"Hi, I’m not home right now, but my answering machine is. So, can you talk to it instead?"

"Hi, I’m David’s answering machine. What are you?"

"Hi! Tom’s answering machine is broken. This is his refrigerator. Please speak very slowly and I’ll stick your message to myself with one of these magnets."

"Hello, you are talking to a machine. I am capable of receiving messages. My owners do not need double glazing and their carpets are clean. They give to charity through their office and do not need their picture taken. If you’re still with me, leave your name and number and they’ll get back to you."

"Hi, this is not an answering machine. This is a telepathic thought-recording device. After the tone, think about your name, think about your number and think about your reason for calling. Then I’ll think about returning your call."
