Ludlow: Ready or not, here come the holidays

It’s hard to believe that we are only a little more than a month away from the Christmas holidays. They will be here before we know it.

In fact, it’s really hard to believe that 2015 is almost done. It seems like it’s only been a couple of months since last New Year’s.  But it is what it is and we just have to accept it. The older we get, the faster time seems to fly. Maybe it’s because we move slower ? You think?

I had a funny thing happen the other day in Green Bay. I was in Superior Liquor for some items not available in Kewaunee. The clerk who waited on me is a gal from Luxemburg and a reader of this column.

The first time we met, was when I paid for my purchases with a credit card.  When she saw my name on the card, she said, “Oh, I read your column every week. I thought you’d be taller.”  I get that a lot.

She asked if she could help me find anything, and I inquired about pickled asparagus. She led me right to them, but then said, “I’m surprised that with your expertise in the kitchen,  you don’t pickle your own asparagus.”  She says that to the gal who only has a kitchen because it came with the house.

I immediately laughed out loud and said, “Well, that would certainly be an exercise in futility.”

I can’t report on all the doings last weekend at Lakehaven Hall and the Christmas Stroll, because for the first time, I didn’t participate in any of it. I’m not a shopper, probably because I worked in retail for 20-plus years. So last weekend, I just laid low.

In a change of subject, the Packers certainly stepped up play and where better to do that, than against the Vikings in Minnesota? The defense was terrific and the offense played good enough to win. But Rodgers and his receivers still need to get in sync. The timing between the two just seems to be a little off at times.

James Jones really stepped it up after a poor showing against the Lions at home. He was on fire against the Vikes. But the season is winding down and the Pack needs to win out to win the division. Can the team do it? Only time will tell.

Because this is written before Thanksgiving, I want to wish everyone a belated holiday. I hope it was  good for everyone.

So far the weather hasn’t been too bad. It’s time to take the golf clubs out of the trunk, but at least we didn’t get all that snow that southern Wisconsin received.
