Ludlow: Second annual 'Pushin' the Cushion' for Kewaunee Rescue Squad was a hoot

Last weekend was the Kewaunee Rescue Squad's second annual “Pushin' the Cushion” event at Haney Park in Kewaunee.

It's a fun event that raises money for the squad. Teams of three or four people compete in races, pushing someone in a chair on skis. They push it down a track to a table set up where participants have to each drink a shot of apple pie, then push the chair and rider back to the starting line.

Last year I was one of the riders, but this year I was just a spectator and enjoyed it just as much. It was a riot to watch and raises some nice money for a good cause. Each team pays an entry fee and they also sold food and drinks to spectators. So I'm sure it was successful.

I heard they had twice as many teams this year, compared to last year. It will likely just continue to grow every year.

Thanks to all the local rescue squads and all they do for the small communities in Kewaunee County. Each squad performs a valuable service for the towns and villages they serve. It's nice to know that if they are needed, they will be there for local residents. Especially for those people who live alone.

So, thank you to each and every one of you who perform this valuable service for the rest of us. You are definitely appreciated! What would these small towns do without you? Thanks again!

» It's that time of the year again, when everyone gets all excited about the Super Bowl. I was watching the playoff game between the Philadelphia Eagles and Minnesota Vikings last weekend and, even though Minnesota is right next door to Wisconsin, I cannot and will not root for the Vikings no matter what. Too much water under that bridge over the years.

And, the New England Patriots win all the time, so I'll be rooting for the Eagles in the Super Bowl. I think they will give the Pats a run for their money. At least I hope so. It's time for a new NFL champion. We will know on Feb. 4. According to the iinternet, the game starts at 5:30 p.m. Central time and will be held at Minnesota's relatively new dome that has housed the Vikings the last two years. I guess it can hold up to 70,000 people.

I will be watching, but it won't be nearly as interesting without the Green Bay Packers in it. However, it is what it is, and we Packers fans just have to wait until next year and keep our fingers crossed. It should be an interesting offseason.
