Ludlow: Some details on Kewaunee High School Alumni Fest

Attention Kewaunee High School alumni and friends — mark July 21 on your calendar. It's the third annual KHS Alumni Fest.

All alumni and their friends are invited to Lakehaven Hall in downtown Kewaunee from noon to 10 p.m. on that Saturday.

I had a call from alumni committee member Joanne O'Neil giving me the skinny on the event. Everyone is invited, whether you attended school in Kewaunee or just know someone who did. There's no admission and donations of your choice will be gladly accepted.

Joanne said the event will include live entertainment all afternoon and evening. The Greatest Hits Polka Band will be live from noon to 3 p.m., followed by the Del Rays from 3 to 6 playing music from the 1960s and '70s, then Adam Trask playing hits from the '80s and '90s from 6 to 10.

I went to this event the first two years and it's really great to see old friends, some who you haven't seen in years. Whoever came up with the original idea — thank you! It was a great idea and I hope it continues forever.

The day will also include a food drive for the Lakeshore Community Food Pantry, so be sure to bring a donation. The event also includes a 50-50 raffle and a Milk Bottle Tournament.

The Kewaunee Fire Department will handle all the food and refreshments. Joanne said it's one of the department's biggest fundraisers for the year. So be sure to come with a big appetite and support our local firefighters. They do a great job and we'd be in a world of hurt without them.

I will probably be there sometime in the afternoon. I'm getting old, you know. I'm at the age where you no longer look forward to birthdays. You just think, “Oh no, not another one already?” But it does beat the alternative, I guess. Although sometimes I'm not too sure about that either. (Just joking.)

We've had some pretty nice weather in June so far, but according to forecasts, the heat and humidity will settle in by the weekend. Not looking forward to that.

But it is summer in Wisconsin. And if you don't like the weather, wait five minutes. At least it's never boring, like southern California, where the sun shines almost every day and rain showers are few and far between. Plus, I'm sure most of their residents have no clue on how to shovel snow, unless they grew up in the Midwest. But honestly, I never missed it when I lived out there. And now I pay to have it done. It's worth it.
