Luxemburg-Casco Primary and Intermediate Schools will be launching a campaign to raise funds for much-needed playground upgrades as part of an initiative to create safe, inclusive and modern play spaces for all students. The proposed plans for the Primary and Intermediate School come in response to growing concerns over outdated equipment, lack of accessibility and increasing maintenance challenges.
The current playgrounds at both schools are more than 25 years old, and they are beginning to show their age. Much of the existing structure is deteriorating and replacement parts are no longer available, making repairs increasingly difficult and unreliable. This has raised safety concerns among staff as well as district maintenance teams, who struggle to keep the aging equipment functional.
Equally pressing is the issue of accessibility. The current playgrounds were designed decades ago, long before inclusive design standards became a priority.
As a result, students with mobility challenges or disabilities are unable to fully participate in outdoor play with their peers. The proposed upgrades include the installation of ADA-compliant play structures and rubberized safety surfacing — both essential components in creating an inclusive environment. These additions will allow all children, regardless of physical ability, to safely enjoy recess and engage in social and physical play.
However, the cost of such upgrades is significant. Modern playground equipment — especially inclusive and accessible structures — is costly, and the rubberized surfacing required for accessibility and safety adds another substantial expense. The district estimates that each playground renovation could cost between $300,000 and $500,000, depending on design and size.
Despite the high cost, district officials emphasize that this is a necessary investment in student health, safety and inclusion.
Play is a critical part of a child’s development — physically, socially and emotionally. Every student deserves a playground where they can participate fully, feel safe and have fun with their classmates. These upgrades aren’t just about new equipment — they’re about equity and access.
To support the funding needs, the district is exploring a combination of grants, community/corporate fundraising and possible allocations from capital improvement budgets. The Luxemburg-Casco PTA has already begun organizing fundraising events and community outreach campaigns to raise awareness and generate local support. A board recognizing donors of $500 or more in a tiered system is also planned to honor businesses and individuals and their contributions.
