Luxemburg-Casco high school gym, wrestling room dedication planned for Jan. 26

LUXEMBURG - Luxemburg-Casco School District's referendum projects — a new gymnasium and wrestling room — are almost ready. 

A dedication event is set for Jan. 26, after which the district's students will gain access to the new facilities.

Meanwhile, a new stage of work on the new middle school building is now underway and the school is  expected to be ready for the 2020-21 academic year.

Ground was broken in May 2019 on the new facilities, which were a major portion of the $27.8 million in referendum projects.

The new gym flood was finished on Jan. 7 and features maple wood and a large Spartan logo. Bleachers come next, with two sets of permanent bleachers and two movable sets, manufactured by Irwin Seating, according to a release this week from the district.

A Hudl HD smart camera also will be added, so games and practices can be filmed without a camera operator. Additionally, ceilings are complete, restrooms are seeing finishing touches, an epoxy flood has been added to the locker rooms and the lockers will be added soon. 

Workers from H.J. Martin and Son were polishing the concrete in the gym’s public corridors this week and last, and all doors and hardware, including those of the front entrance, now are largely in place, the district said. 

A temporary concrete slab was poured to to give visitors a solid pathway to the facility, and the area will be completed later this year. 

Installation of the competition floor in the new wrestling room also continues, the district said. Members of a parent booster group helped prepare the floor with rubber support pieces on the underside of the plywood surface. Having rubber to separate the plywood floor from the concrete underneath helps to mitigate concussions, the district said. 

Epoxy flooring, including three Spartan head logos, has been completed in the entry and side viewing areas of the wrestling room.

At the new middle school, with interior walls almost complete, pouring of the interior floors begins this week, starting with the science classrooms in the southeast corner of the structure. Ground preparations, including frost removal, took place last week. Roof trusses and decking is underway, and as of this week, Nexus Solutions Project Manager Mike Frailing said that about one-eighth of the building’s rubber roof surface is done.

“We are excited to share our new athletic facilities with the Luxemburg-Casco community which has made them possible,” District Superintendent Glenn Schlender said in another release. “People have watched with great interest over the last eight months as the new gym and wrestling room rose from the ground. This is a great opportunity for everyone to see all aspects of the new facilities that will serve L-C for decades to come before regular use begins in the days to follow.”

Doors for the event will open at 2:30 p.m., with attendees entering through the main entrance of the new gymnasium on the west side of the building. Members of the high school boys’ and girls’ varsity basketball teams will hold a shoot-around on the new gym floor. The student band, choir and dance team also will perform.

In the wrestling room, a youth wrestling clinic will be led by University of Wisconsin-Madison Head Wrestling Coach Chris Bono and Associate Head Coach Jon Reader. Members of the varsity wrestling team will assist with the clinic.

Following a short program and ribbon-cutting ceremony, community members will have the opportunity to take self-guided tours of the new facilities. Refreshments will be provided through the facility’s upgraded concessions area.

In the event of inclement weather, the event will be postponed to 6 p.m. Jan. 29.
