Luxemburg-Casco High School hosts Trades Career Day

Posted

LUXEMBURG-CASCO – Luxemburg-Casco High School recently held a Trades Career Day for students in grades 9-12, with over 150 students participating.

The event aims to introduce students to a variety of high-earning career opportunities in the skilled trades and provide hands-on experiences to spark their interest. Over 100 Luxemburg-Casco High School seniors already have positions in the region as a part of the community’s youth apprenticeship program, which boasts one of the highest participation rates in the state,
Representatives from various trade unions and organizations were present to engage with the students. These included:

• Bricklayers & Allied Craftworkers Local 3, 9 & 11
• Carpenters Local 1146

• Engineers Local 139
• International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers 158
• Plumbers & Steamfitters UA Local 400
• International Association of Sheet Metal, Air, Rail and Transportation 18

Each group led interactive activities and discussions to showcase the skills and knowledge required in their respective trades. Students watched a soldering demonstration and participated in activities like pipe threading, pipe welding, switch wiring, and other tasks under the guidance of experienced professionals.

To ensure maximum exposure to different trades, students were divided into groups of 10-15 and rotated through three different trade stations during each 90-minute class period. This allowed them to gain a broad overview of the various career paths available and ask questions directly to industry experts.

Building a skilled workforce

The Trades Career Day intends to not only provide students with valuable insights into the skilled trades, but to also highlight the importance of these professions in the local and national economy. By showcasing the potential for high-paying jobs and fulfilling careers, the event encouraged students to consider pursuing further education and training in the skilled trades.

This initiative by Luxemburg-Casco High School aims to have a positive impact on both students and the community. By fostering interest in the skilled trades at a young age, the school seeks to address the growing skills gap and build a strong workforce for the future. Additionally, students who choose to pursue careers in the trades will be well-equipped to contribute to the local economy and enjoy stable, well-paying jobs.
