LUXEMBURG - A teacher at Luxemburg-Casco Primary School tested positive for COVID-19, but well before students returned to classrooms, according to district Superintendent Glenn Schlender.

The teacher instructed virtually from home while students started in-person classes this week. According to the district's reopening plan presentation, staff will monitor classrooms led by a work-from-home teacher.

"This particular person left work before the school year started," Schlender said. 'If you can call it fortunate, it was ... there was very limited exposure."

The primary school houses 4K through second grade classes and early childhood education. All students except those in 4K and younger must wear masks. Schlender said the district placed polycarbonate barriers on teachers' desks as well as between students in classrooms and at lunch tables. They try to keep students spread out as much as possible, even during recess.

Luxemburg-Casco schools will follow guidelines from the Kewaunee County Health Department to determine when the teacher who tested positive can return to campus. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends people isolate for at least 14 days or until symptoms subside. They advise people end isolation after at least 24 hours without fever, not using fever-reducing medication.
