TOWN OF LUXEMBURG - Firefighters from six area departments needed about five hours to extinguish a house fire Saturday.
According to an announcement from the Luxemburg Community Fire Department, it was dispatched at 10:13 a.m. Saturday for a report of smoke coming from the eaves of a home at N7034 County AB, just north of the Village of Luxemburg. While en route, more calls came in reporting the smoke, and the call was updated to a multiple-alarm fire.
When the firefighters arrived, they found not only smoke coming from eaves on all sides of the single-story ranch-style home but also flames from the eaves on the back side.
The firefighters forced their way into the home and confirmed no one was inside. The crew that went in first tried to extinguish the fire in the interior and attic areas, but the roof soon showed signs of collapsing.
The interior crew then was pulled out and firefighting operations continued outside the structure. Once it was determined it was safe to re-enter the home, crews went back in and completed interior operations.
The cause of the fire is probably electrical, according to the fire department. It also said the homeowner was not at home when the fire broke out, and there were no reported injuries, but the home and its contents sustained significant fire, smoke and water damage.
The village's water system was shut down for maintenance at the time of the fire, but a fill site was set up at a pre-designated pond in the village.
The Casco, New Franken, Kewaunee, Algoma and Carlton fire departments and Luxemburg Rescue Squad also responded to assist the Luxemburg department on the scene, and the Kewaunee County Sheriff’s Department performed traffic control. Also, the Tisch Mills Volunteer Fire Department stood by in Luxemburg in case of calls coming in during the fire fight and ended up responding to assist on a wildland fire.
