By Josh Staloch Sports Editor LUXEMBURG – The Luxemburg-Casco High boys basketball team is hoping that the experience it gained over the course of a tough 2022-23 campaign, coupled with a wealth of basketball knowledge brought to the table by new head coach and former professional basketball player Logan VanderVelden, will be the difference in getting the team competitive in the North Eastern Conference. “Practice is going really well, they’re putting in a lot of effort,” said VanderVelden, who played at UW-Green Bay under coach Dick Bennett in the 1990s before embarking on an 11-year long career as a professional. “I’m asking them to do a lot of things that they may or may not be used to but the energy and the effort is there and that’s all I can ask for.” Last season, the Spartans were 8-16 overall, 7-11 in the North Eastern Conference for seventh place. That put the team one win ahead of Waupaca and two wins behind Denmark in sixth. L-C kicked off conference play last season by defeating Marinette 55-49 and Oconto Falls 62-49 but a rough stretch saw L-C lose seven in a row, five of them to North Eastern opponents. But coach VanderVelden sees improvement on the horizon. With the program enjoying good numbers, depth will be a strength this season for the Spartans and coach sees himself being able to go nine or 10 deep with everyone able to contribute. The Spartans lost four players from last year’s group to graduation but have a good group of athletes to take on leadership roles as seniors Braeden Schley, Trevor Beaupre and Lance Cherovsky look to anchor the team. Coach VanderVelden will also count on juniors like Josh Parins and JD Glampe to step up this season. “I’m just looking to share my knowledge and experience and hopefully, I do right by these kids.” Said coach VanderVelden.
