Luxemburg Speedway has a group interested in promoting stock car racing; county to discuss

LUXEMBURG - It's not yet a done deal, but it appears one group is on track to promote stock car races in 2020 at Luxemburg Speedway.

That group, under the name Kewaunee County Racing Association submitted the only proposal to the county before the Dec. 11 deadline to operate races next year at the third-mile clay oval on the Kewaunee County Fairgrounds.

The proposal was discussed during the Dec. 11 meeting of the county Promotions & Recreation Committee, but no action was taken so the association could make a couple changes to it, said David Myers, director of the Promotions & Recreation Department, which oversees fairgrounds operations.

Another meeting of the committee was scheduled for Wednesday night, with discussion of the track proposal and possible action by the committee — to accept the proposal and forward it to the full County Board or turn it down — the only item on the agenda. This edition of the Star-News went to press prior to that meeting. 

Myers said he wasn't familiar with all the people behind the association, but he knows at least some of them are racers or have been involved with local short-track racing in some capacity.

The group that ran the track in 2019, SkyHigh Entertainment, LLC, had no experience in promoting and very little in racing and came in with promised higher payouts to the racers and promotional ideas unusual to local tracks. But spectator attendance and the number of racers fell dramatically compared to past years.

Myers told the Star-News last month that the county hoped it could work with an experienced racer or promoter in 2020, although that wouldn't be a disqualifying factor when considering proposals.

Under the association's proposal, Myers said, the schedule at the speedway will be trimmed from 18 races this past year — every Friday from May 3 to Sept. 6 and a special two-day show the week after to end the season, except during the Kewaunee County Fair and Ag Heritage Days — to 12. The association would rent the track from the county for $1,500 each week of racing, the same as in past years with other promoters.

Myers said a cost estimate showed a 12-race schedule could be financially viable for both the county and the promoter.

Luxemburg Speedway has run a regular schedule of stock car and modified races every year since the 1960s, except for a four-year hiatus from 1983 to 1986.
