Sandi Christman was elected the new mayor of Kewaunee. She defeated incumbent mayor John Blaha by a vote of 650 to 453, with candidate John Griffith picking up 69 votes.

Wayne Schmidt, Algoma’s mayor was returned to office by a vote of 736 to 423, defeating Virginia Haske. Schmidt has served as mayor for the past four years and also served in that position from 1984 to 2002.

In a Kewaunee County upset, Mary “Mimi” Dobbins defeated Kewaunee County Board Chairman Ron Heuer by a vote of 260 to 192, in the District 12 race for county supervisor.

10 years ago: 2007

It’s another year of celebrating Algoma’s favorite pizza. Penguin City Family Restaurant is celebrating over 25 years of service - 1981 to 2007.

Clem Theys is now Algoma mayor, turning back David Groessl, 655 to 619. Theys will succeed Jim Schwedler, who has been acting mayor since Orville DeMeuse died in January.

Ledvina, Tess, Decker and Paine win Kewaunee School Board positions.

Dale R. Jandrain and Daniel Wautlet were returned to the Luxemburg-Casco School Board in Tuesday’s Spring General Election, topping Thomas Hruska in a race for two at-large seats.

40 years Ago: 1977

A reminder that this - April 18 to 23 - is Bike Safety Week. The Optimists want you to remember “When you see a cyclist, give him a break”.

Alan Lasee wants to represent rural and small-town interests in the State Senate. He believes farmers of this state need representation and would appreciate your vote on May 3.

Reigning over the Luxemburg-Casco Jr. Prom on Saturday, April 30, will be King Mike Willems and Queen Mary Deprez.

50 Years Ago: 1967

Luxemburg High School’s FFA cattle judging team made a triumphant return from Madison on Monday. The team topped a field of 182 entries to take first place in a statewide contest.

Reigning over the Luxemburg High School Jr. Prom on Saturday, April 23, will be King Gerry Peot and Queen Nancy Novak. Music will be furnished by The Aristocrats.

Thirty-four Kewaunee High School students, including nine with straight A grades, are on the honor roll for the third period.

60 years ago: 1957

Ground was broken this past week for the new home of Mr. and Mrs. Norman Hoffman. All the neighbors on Maryknoll Lane welcome them to the neighborhood.

Casco royalty for the Junior Prom are King Frank Fameree and Queen Nancy Gigot.

Ross Hamachek, an eighth-grade student at Hillcrest School in Kewaunee, is able to spell “Exaggerate.” As a result, he is the 1957 spelling champion of Kewaunee County.

75 years ago: 1942

Through the courtesy of the Quaker Oats Company, Aunt Jemima will be here April 9, 10 and 11. Meet her and enjoy her splendid singing and cooking.

Trees suitable for planting in thin woods that have no young trees are available free to farmers from a surplus at the Wisconsin Rapids forest nursery. They will include red oak, white ash and soft elm.

Mr. and Mrs. Edmund Sell, formerly of West Kewaunee, are the happy parents of a baby girl, born to them at Egeland Hospital in Sturgeon Bay on Sunday.

90 years ago: 1927

Two head of cattle were killed by a bolt of lightning, while stabled in the Pierce town barn of Charles Toppe.

The new drapes and seat covers in the Dug-Out Ballroom will see their first service at the annual Jr. Prom on Friday, May 6.

The Carnot school district held a special meeting to decide the question of whether to maintain a one- or a two-room school. The question was decided in favor of a two room by a vote of 21 to 36.

100 years ago: 1917

During bathing season last summer, city officials were careful of the city’s beautiful Crescent Beach. This year, there is evidence the beach has been misused as a public dumping ground.

The Citizen’s Bank has secured 100 lots, which they will distribute to families desiring gardens. They will be furnished free of charge to applicants who file requests no later than April 20 or 21.

The Village of Casco is to have a new garage. Adolph Albrecht, who has been employed at the garage of Dvorak and Gaynor, will erect a new building, with construction to begin next week.

110 years ago: 1907

The new cigar factory is to be opened in Algoma within the next few days by John V. Boehm. It will be located on Mill Street in the 2nd ward.

Fred Yates Fellows, a grandson of Capt. C.L. Fellows of Clay Banks, was married to Miss Gertrude Vaughn at Bluefield, West Virginia, on Wednesday.

Last Monday afternoon as Henry J. Kossow of Ahnapee was leaving the city for his home, he came near to having a serious accident. The pole of his rig struck the second freight car of a train entering the Second Street crossing. Fortunately, he had his team well under control and missed what might have been a fatal accident.

120 years ago: 1897

Authenticated reports from Door County show that Charles Masse was elected judge over Charles Fellows. Fellows has succeeded in securing a recount.

W. A. Hays, formerly principal of the local high school is now studying law at the state university.

The Mary Mills cleared for the south last Thursday night. She was loaded with posts purchased from S. Perry.
