The Wolves girls basketball team is the top-ranked team in the Associated Press poll, and the Storm is ranked No. 6. The rivals will be in the same division for the post-season for the first time since 2010.

After 28 years with the Algoma Public Library, and its director since 2005, Rita Schiesser is now retiring. Library services have dramatically changed since she took the job of director of adult services in 1987.

According to election papers filed in the County Clerk's office, Ron Heuer, chair of the county's Republican Party, will be challenged by Mary Ellen Dobbins, chair of the county's Democratic Party in the April 5 election.

10 years ago: 2007

Algoma High School will be presenting the musical "Grease" on Jan.  27 and 28. Tickets go on sale Jan. 8.

A program called Silver Sneakers is a Humana-run program which is offered free to All Aboard Fitness members at the Kewaunee center to people aged from 50-80.

Luxemburg-Casco won all but four matches in downing host Sturgeon Bay/Sevastopol, 49-18, in a Packerland Conference wrestling open on Thursday.

25 years ago: 1992

Mr. and Mrs. Alvin Jossert, Rte. 3, Luxemburg, celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary at Our Lady of Peace parish in Sugar Bush, with Fr. John Schmitt presiding.

Wisconsin cheese carried away 15 of 29 awards in the National Milk Producers Federation annual cheese competition, at the organizations annual meeting in Orlando, Fla.

Joan Schlag, Green Bay, was the Christmas Day $1,000 winner in the Luxemburg Lions Club fundraiser calendar drawing. 

40 years ago: 1977

Arwed Serrahn, Town of Ahnapee, has sighted the first robin of 1977, at his home on Jan. 3.

The Algoma area, along with the rest of Wisconsin, has been granted a reprieve from the coldest winter in years. For a change, the weather is bearable.

Cathy Marcks, a sophomore at Luxemburg-Casco High School, won first in the American Legion oratory contest held in Algoma on Monday night. She spoke on freedoms inherent in the Constitution.

50 years ago: 1967 

Virginia Ann Feld and Norman L. Johnson were married at 3 p.m. on Monday in St. Mary's Church, Algoma. They exchanged vows before Rt. Rev. Msgr. F.C. Heimann.

Kewaunee County officials were sworn in Tuesday by County Clerk Edward O'Konski. They were Alice Flaherty, register of deeds; Jacob Blazkovvic, district attorney; Roland Baierl, treasurer and Joe Horak, sheriff.

The Algoma Memorial Hospital greeted twins sons of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Wessel on New Years eve and waited until Tuesday evening, Jan. 3, for the first baby of the new year, a daughter born at 8:28 p.m. to Mr. and Mrs. Louis Malcore of Casco.

60 years ago: 1957

Miss Catherine Bultman was among the student nurses who received caps during ceremonies at Holy Family Hospital, Manitowoc recently.

John Srnka, a senior at Casco High School, has been appointed Kewaunee County Chairman for the Teen Against Polio committee for the 1957 March of Dimes.

Patricia Schmelzer, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Delbert Schmelzer, Forestville, and Eugene LeBotte, son of Mr. and Mrs. Elmer LeBotte, Algoma, were married last Thursday morning in Holy Name of Mary parish, Maplewood.

75 years ago: 1942

If you've been thinking of trading in the old jalopy on a new 1942 model, just forget about it for the duration of the war. Automobile production will stop by Feb. 1. Auto factories will make only tanks, planes, machine guns and cannons.

Sub-zero readings were constant from Saturday night until noon on Thursday, when thermometers soared to one degree above zero.

Enlisting in the war effort classes will be held on Saturdays during the months of January, February and March. Summer vacation will start on May 15, in order to release students for farm work three weeks earlier than usual.

90 years ago: 1927

Beginning Feb. 1, the rate on air mail will be 10 cents for each half ounce, regardless of the distance.

About 350 people were in attendance at the band concert given by the high school band and the Girls Glee Club, at the Dug Out on Tuesday evening.

The Bank of Rio Creek re-elected officers for the coming year. They are Charles J. Sell, president; Fred DeVillers, vice president; J.J. Koss, Eli Jandrin, J.T. Laurent and Carl E. Fabry, directors.

100 years ago: 1917

During the past year, Kewaunee County has spent $32,537.80 in the improvement of its public highways.

This is the season when farmers bring in their hay for market. One farmer brought in 13 loads, a total of 23 tons, for which he received $11.50 per ton.

With ice covering the river, harbor and lake at Two Rivers, the city has arranged for refuse from the meat markets to aid in feeding the gulls.

110 years ago: 1907

Wenzel Chapek and Joseph Muench have formed a partnership and will engage in fishing from the port of Algoma.

Mrs. William White entertained friends at her home in honor of Mr. and Mrs. Frank McDonald, before their departure for California.

William Trudell brought over from Sturgeon Bay a skeleton frame of a boat being done in a factory there. After completing the hull here, he will install a gasoline engine.

120 years ago: 1897

The dock strikers at Kewaunee were successful. They returned to work at 20 cents per hour.

J.E. Molle has devised a labor-saving machine for sawing wood. A leather belt connects the rear wheel of his bicycle with a pulley which turns a shaft attached to a circular saw. One man rides the bike and another manipulates the machine.

Frank Jacobovsky has secured a position in Frank Graessel's meat market.
