Luxemburg-Casco junior Carson Neubert won his second straight state wrestling title at the Kohl Center in Madison last weekend.
Neubert, the top seed, received a first-round bye before beating Cole Duchateau of Arrowhead in the quarterfinals, 8-0. He then pinned Emmett Becker of Slinger in 1:38 before defeating Cade Aaberg of Oregon 3-2 to win his second state championship. It was the 47th individual title at L-C to go along with 14 state team championships.
Neubert went 55-6 as a freshman at 120 pounds, 55-1 at 126 last year and 54-1 at 144 this season for a three-year record of 164-8.
Meanwhile, Spartans’ junior Joseph Jeanquart placed fourth at 138. He won his preliminary bout 9-0 over Prince Zahir (43-14) of Cameron, then pinned Preston Schneider (44-8) of Oshkosh West in 5:48. He then lost a 7-2 decision to Cashtyn Botting (42-5) of Hortonville and a 5-2 match to Nathan Henderson (41-3) of Holmen. Jeanquart finished the season 41-13.
Jerry Van Ess, our L-C boys wrestling correspondent, said the Spartans competed in Division 1 the past two seasons under the WIAA’s new competitive balance rule, but hopes they’ll return to Div. 2 again this fall.
On the girls’ side, senior Kiley Georgel earned fifth place, going 4-1 and finishing 35-5 on the season. She opened with a win by pin in just 20 seconds, then lost an 11-4 decision to Mercedes Kruse (33-5) of West DePere before finishing up with a decision, pin and decision.
