By Josh Staloch Sports Editor KEWAUNEE – The Kewaunee High boys basketball team, under the leadership of first year head coach Matt Bosdeck, will look to keep pace with, and hopefully improve on, a 2022-23 campaign that saw the team go 17-9 overall, 13-4 in the Packerland Conference. “We did graduate a fair amount of seniors but my expectations are still high,” said coach Bosdeck. “I don’t see any reason why we can’t still compete for a conference title. I fully anticipate competing. He said the team is going to rely on a fast-paced style of play to win games. The team will be high energy. “That’s kind of what I preach. It doesn’t matter if it’s practice or a game, up by 10 or down by 10.” He said. The high-intensity style of play will apply to both sides of the ball but look for Kewaunee to keep things simple for the most part. With only a couple of practice sessions in the books so far, Coach Bosdeck is still figuring out how all the pieces of the puzzle fit together but he knows he’d like to run a motion-style offense while bringing a lot of pressure with a man-to-man defense, using the team’s speed as an advantage always. Doing the little things well will be key to Kewaunee’s success this year. “We’ve got to get good looks,” said Bosdeck, a Kewaunee High graduate whose coaching background includes half a dozen years on the sidelines in the Kewaunee AAU system. “We’ve only got so many possessions. We can’t be wasting them by just walking up the court and firing up a three. That’s not going to win us games.” The Storm will also be working hard to make sure they take better advantage of free throw opportunities this season. “Free throws are a must,” coach Bosdeck said. “We’ve got to have good free throw shooting. I know they struggled last year at the line, free throw shooting lost us some games we should have won. Seniors Braxton Riha and Thomas Stangel, along with junior Jackson Wisnicky and sophomore Avery Jerabek are expected to anchor the roster as things come together for the season opener on Tuesday, Nov. 28 at Manitowoc Lutheran.
