New kayak launch opens at Olson Park; public invited to ribbon cutting

Posted

ALGOMA - Kayakers, canoers and stand-up paddleboarders will find it easier or more convenient to get onto the Ahnapee River with the opening of a new kayak launch at Olson Park.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony will be held for the launch at noon Thursday, Aug. 30, at Olson Park, N8108 State 42. Experienced kayakers will demonstrate how to use the launch after the ceremony. The public is invited.

The float-style kayak launch will allow those of all abilities and experience levels using kayaks, canoes and stand-up paddleboards to easily access the water.

Users will be able to avoid getting their feet wet as they push or pull onto the port more effortlessly with the launch.  The one-piece floating construction rises and falls with fluctuating water levels.

The launch is a city project that was funded in part by the Algoma Lions Club and a grant through Algoma Utilities.

Regarding future work, Parks and Recreation Director Sara Robertson said in a news release that the Bay-Lakes Regional Planning Commission has started working on a master park plan for Olson Park and identifying a water trail from Forestville to Algoma. Community engagement meetings will be scheduled in the next month, Robertson said.
