You guys have had a tremendous football season so far. What’s it been like to be a Spartan this year?
Being a Spartan is such an honor for me because not only do I get to enjoy the game I love by going out every Friday and performing but I get to do it with my best friends. It has been such a rewarding experience to be able to make great memories and just have fun with my brothers.
Being a three-sport athlete and a member of the National Honors Society has to be a ton of work. How do you balance that to avoid burnout/overworking yourself?
My parents have instilled in me since I started athletics that school work always comes first no matter what and they always make sure that I give my main focus to my academics and then to sports. Being able to be in NHS was something I looked at as very rewarding for my hard work in school and while it does have a lot of responsibilities I accept them with open arms. Being in three sports is also very time consuming and may seem daunting to some people but when you are spending your time doing the things you love with your best friends it isn’t so bad. Having all of my time taken up by sports and school work, I have learned invaluable life lessons about how I should spend my time off whether it be studying, or getting stronger in the weight room, or just relaxing/recovering. The time spent relaxing/recovering is one of the most important things I have learned from my experience and it has kept me from ever getting burnt out.
What does the word “Brotherhood” mean to you right now?
Brotherhood to me is the family and culture we have created. To some it may just sound like another phrase used by coaches to encourage their players to be engaged but to us on the football team it is much more. The brotherhood was created my freshman year and each year since it has grown and meant more and more and has become so impactful and meaningful to each and every player.
What do your plans for after graduation look like?
After graduation I plan on furthering my education and studying sports management in college and I also plan on playing baseball. I am currently undecided on where I want to attend.
Your grandfather plays a special role with the football team. What’s his name and can you tell us a bit about what he does?
My grandfather plays an integral role on the football team. My grandpa, Jim Schley, drives bus for the Luxemburg-Casco school district and for many years he has been the team bus driver who drives all of us players to each away game. I think it is pretty cool that I get to share this unique experience with him and to be able to celebrate with him after every win on the bus is fun to say the least.
Do you have any siblings?
I have one sister, her name is Hannah Schley.
How about pets?
I have one dog — a golden retriever named Gracie.
