Nell

School: Algoma

Sport: Volleyball

Parents: Tanya (Nickolai) and Eric Nell

How long have you been playing volleyball?

I started playing volleyball when I was nine. My mom played volleyball at UWGB so volleyball has always been a part of my life.

Do you play any other sports?

Yes, I also play softball

It seems like, to be a good setter, you have to be very aware of what your teammates are doing at all times. Is that something that comes with coaching or is it more instinct?

It’s more of just an instinct. I keep in mind which hitters are hitting well in that game and I tend to feed them more. I also make sure I communicate with my hitters before every play to make sure we’re on the same page.

What has been the most memorable moment of your volleyball career so far?

I don’t have a specific moment but I would say this year has been the most memorable. I’ve been playing volleyball with most of my teammates ever since I was in fourth grade which makes this senior season extra special.

Speaking of coaching, describe Coach Robinson’s leadership style.

His leadership and coaching style is definitely more collaborative. He likes to ask us about our input before making a decision. He also puts in a lot of hard work outside of practice by watching our film, putting in our stats, and by preparing us for our next game by watching other teams’ film.

As one of the top seniors at Algoma this year, academically speaking, how do you balance varsity athletics with all of the extra things a student has to do in order to even be considered for valedictorian?

It can definitely get stressful at times however, playing sports is a way that I relieve that stress. Staying organized and focused is also a key to balancing both my academics and athletics.

Do you have any siblings?

Yes I have an older brother Trevor.

What are your plans for after graduation?

I applied to UW-Madison to study Kinesiology, with the intent of being a physical therapist specializing in athletics.

Do you think you’ll always play volleyball?

I definitely will always still play volleyball. In college I plan on playing in intramurals and after college I plan on coaching at some point.
