KEWAUNEE - Fourth of July celebrations are back this year, and Kewaunee County residents will have two opportunities — actually on the Third of July, Saturday — to have fun and "ooh" and "aah" at the fireworks. Here's a quick look at them.
The traditional evening parade isn't happening this year, but the other usual activities are back and a couple new ones added as the Kewaunee Area Chamber of Commerce's annual Independence Celebration features music, food, public art and fireworks Saturday at and around Lakehaven Hall, 96 Ellis St.
From 11 a.m. to 10:30 p.m., the locally-based Muskrat City Sportsman's Club will serve hamburgers, brats, hot dogs and a fish fry. All proceeds will go to scholarships and educational programs.
Games and other activities for children, including a balloon artist, start at 3 p.m. and run through dusk.
Taking the stage for some music is regional classic rock and blues band Blind Ambition at 4 p.m., also playing until dusk.
Residents and visitors also can view and vote in the city's sixth annual Art Walk. Local artists painted banners that went on display on light poles in late June in downtown Kewaunee and will remain up through fall. People can pick up an Art Walk ballot at the Kewaunee Chamber building, 308 N. Main St., or the BP or Citgo convenience stores in the city before strolling downtown to check out the public art. Ballots can be turned in at Lakehaven Hall or the chamber building.
Wrapping up the celebration with a patriotic flair, a veterans tribute will be held at 8:45 p.m. at the end of Ellis Street near Lakehaven Hall.

That's followed at dusk by the fireworks, sponsored by Brown Fest and the chamber. Kewaunee's fireworks display is unique in that it includes a colorful "ground show" that doesn't rise far above the ground and might best be viewed from Lakehaven Hall instead of the beach on the Lake Michigan shore along with a more traditional, high-flying aerial fireworks display over the shore.

While the city doesn't sponsor an official Fourth of July celebration or fireworks spectacular, the public still can check out exploding colors lighting up the night sky over Algoma thanks to Kari and Dave Anderson.
The owners/operators of At the Water's Edge Bed and Breakfast are holding Dave's 13th Annual Fireworks Show at their B&B on the Lake Michigan shore, N7136 State 42, at about 9:45 p.m. Saturday. The public is invited to park on the side of the highway and bring folding chairs to sit on the front lawn of the waterfront B&B and watch what Dave calls "45 minutes of continuous BOOM." In case of rain, the show will be launched Sunday.
For more information, visit the "At the Waters Edge Bed and Breakfast" Facebook page.
