Packerland unbeatens to meet

Wolves at Kewaunee Tuesday, L-C tied for 1st in NEC

Algoma and Kewaunee girls are on a collision course for the top spot in the Packerland Conference, and the Storm is set to host the first of two regular season meetings Tuesday.

With two-time Player of the Year Jade Kroll anchoring a veteran group, Lynn Geier’s team was the pre-season favorite. But the two 300-plus win coaches both know anything can happen when the War on the Shore takes to the court.
“It’s about matching their intensity and self-confidence,” said Algoma Coach Mark Zastrow, whose team is 5-0 in the Packerland, 6-5 overall.

“We have to play good defense, and have kids make big shots in big situations. We need to be disciplined, stay in front of Kroll, box out and handle their many different defenses. When the opportunities are there, we just have to take advantage of them. That’s the bottom line.”

Kroll and Gabby Stangel each scored 11 points in the first half of Kewaunee’s 58-33 win over Southern Door Tuesday. The Storm (4-0 Packerland, 8-2 overall) led 39-13 at intermission. Kroll finished with 18 points, including a trio of three-pointers, while Stangel had 15, Braelyn Chevalier nine (six in the first half) and Summer Walechka seven, all in the first 18 minutes. Kyleigh Claflin had 16 for the Eagles.

A night earlier, Algoma played its most complete game of the season, a 67-39 win over Two Rivers.

Jadyn Nellis scored 15, Claire Gerdmann 14 and Sadie Rikkola 12, while Lauren Loucks added eight, Therese Gerdmann and Reagan Schneider each seven and Megan Zimmer four. Nellis hit three 3s, Rikkola two and Schneider one.

The Wolves led 20-2 early.

“We came out with good energy,” Zastrow said. “I was really happy with the way we defended, hit the offensive glass and played with a lot of confidence in the first half as well. We shot it well from the perimeter, and when that happened it pulled ‘em out a little bit, and we got good looks in the post and also attacked the rim.”

L-C tied at the top

Luxemburg-Casco is tied atop the North Eastern Conference at 4-1 after handing Wrightstown its first NEC loss Tuesday night. Brianna Bray scored 21 points, including four three-pointers, to lead the way. Sienna Blohowiak added 10, and Alayna Deprez eight.

L-C, 6-6 overall, lost to visiting Kewaunee 46-36 Friday night. Bray had 13 points and Deprez nine. For the Storm, Kroll scored 25 and Stangel 11.
