KEWAUNEE - The Green Bay Packers Foundation helped the Zoological Society of Kewaunee County get one step closer to a major makeover of Bruemmer Park Zoo.
The society accepted a $7,000 grant from the foundation Dec. 4 at Lambeau Field to be put toward construction of an Environmental Education Center and pheasant exhibit, part of the zoo’s master plan.
“The grant from the Green Bay Packers Foundation is the start of a cooperative effort to find more funds to support the expansion of Bruemmer Park Zoo,” Dave Myers, Kewaunee County Promotions & Recreation Director, said in a press release. “It has been exciting to watch the zoo evolve with the upgrades that we have completed and are planning to do.”
The estimated price tag of the master plan for the zoo improvements is $1.5 million. Myers told the Kewaunee Star-News the zoological society has applied for a number of grants for the project and this is the first one to come in, with others awaiting approval.
Pam Zander, president of the zoological society, said the group also is planning to launch a capital campaign in the near future to raise money for the project.
The education center and pheasant exhibit are two of a number of planned additions or improvements at the zoo. Most recently, work was finished on a new deer and goat shelter in the upper portion of the zoo.
Bruemmer Park Zoo is at E4280 County F, west of Kewaunee. It is open from 7 a.m. to sunset year-round. Admission is free, although donations are appreciated; pets are not allowed.
