ALGOMA – The Algoma Venture Academy (AVA) and Area Education Foundation (AAEF) are excited to announce the return of their annual Pickleball Tournament, newly renamed the Paddle by the Lake Pickleball Showdown. This fun and inclusive community tournament, taking place at the Algoma Wellness Center, brings players of all ages together for a day of healthy competition, social connection and family-friendly fun.
“Pickleball is for everyone, whether you’re a seasoned player or just looking for a fun way to get out of the house this chilly winter. The Paddle by the Lake Showdown is a super casual, lively event with a dynamic duo costume contest, friendly competition, and plenty of laughs, all while raising funds to support our local students.” said Rayanne Johnson, marketing and events coordinator for AAEF.
The competition is open to players of all skill levels. There will be three divisions: beginner, intermediate and senior (55+). As of 2026, there will also be a dynamic duo costume contest. Attendees are encouraged to come dressed as iconic duos like peanut butter and jelly, Mario and Luigi, salt and pepper, Batman and Robin or any famous pair. Prizes will be awarded for creativity.
Registration closes on Wednesday, Feb. 18 or when divisions fill. Visit the Paddle by the Lake Showdown Facebook page or go to https://forms.gle/rsvNyvrTbuUPZCEc9 to register.
Community members are welcome to attend at no cost. Spectators can enjoy the matches, concessions and a silent auction run by AVA students featuring goods from local businesses, supporting student projects and scholarships.
Proceeds from the event directly support Algoma students, funding scholarships through AAEF and educational programs to enhance opportunities for youth in the Algoma community. The event is made possible thanks to generous sponsors and community partners, whose support helps invest in students’ futures.
