Plan Commission will review school district request

The Kewaunee City Plan Commission at its Jan. 28 meeting will review a request by the Kewaunee School District for a conditional use permit for a new agricultural education building that it wants to build across the street from its existing Third Street school campus.

The proposal relocates the agricultural education building from where it was originally sited on the existing school campus for a 2015 referendum, according to Mayor John Blaha. The new building would be built on a parcel the school district owns that is now a corn field, according to Blaha.

A conditional use permit is necessary because the proposed building would be located in an area zoned as R3 (multifamily, residential district) and the city has an ordinance that prohibits keeping livestock in the city except on properly zoned premises, he said.

The school district has requested that the city allow it to house livestock, either permanently or temporarily, in the agricultural building for educational purposes, Blaha said.

City and school officials have been meeting since June to discuss various aspects of the project, according to Blaha.

"This is a unique situation," said Jeff Vollenweider, chairman of the Plan Commission.  "Everyone wants it to be done properly."

Vollenweider said that the Plan Commission was working with legal counsel to make sure that they are property advised and everything is correct. He said the commission was acting as a neutral party between the city and school district.
