LUXEMBURG – The Luxemburg-Casco Spartan Football Booster Club is holding
their annual Porkie-Pancake Breakfast on Sunday, Feb. 8 (Super Bowl Sunday) from 8 a.m. to noon at the Kewaunee County Fairgrounds.
The event is staffed by booster members and parents, with players assisting, and the porkies and pancakes are cooked fresh onsite. Fruit cups, coffee, tea and juice will also be served. Food is available via dine-in, drive-through or takeout.
The Luxemburg-Casco Spartan Football Booster Club aims to fill the gaps in funds in order to keep L-C’s football team playing safely. Parent and club volunteer Eric Loritz said the breakfast fundraiser is the booster club’s biggest event of the year, with the largest community footprint.
“We’re trying to get people in and at least be a part of the whole football community. And it works quite well,” he said.
Funds raised primarily go towards equipment, which needs to be refreshed regularly due to the contact nature of the sport. Helmets are the most expensive piece of equipment, and need to be recertified and upgraded regularly.
“We’ve estimated it to be a little better than $1,000 to equip each player,” Loritz said. “With the way that things are, especially with concussion protocol and everything, safety is a big, big factor in trying to keep the team out on the field.”
While the Porkie-Pancake Breakfast has only been a tradition since just before the COVID-19 pandemic, Loritz said he and other parents and club members have gotten service down to a science. The club has come to expect a surge at certain times as nearby churches’ services end, and Loritz said they usually find themselves with the perfect amount of food for everyone who attends.
The booster club will also offer a rifle drawing, auction and various raffles, including a popular gun raffle and a fishing trip auction, and Super Bowl boards.
