APPLETON – The Luxemburg-Casco volleyball team is off to a 5-2 start to its 2023 campaign following a big weekend against tough competition in Appleton at the Beast of the Northeast tournament held at Community First Champion Center.
The Spartans were undefeated during Friday’s pool play, beating Ripon, Kingsford (MI) and West Salem, all 2-0.
In bracket action on Saturday, Aug. 26, L-C beat Green Bay Southwest 2-0, then lost to Hortonville 2-0. The team finished the tournament with a 2-1 win against Edgewood and then was defeated 2-0 by Fox Valley Lutheran.
“It was a good start to the season,” said L-C head coach Jeff Frey. “We have some growing pains that we are going through with some injuries and girls being in new spots, but the effort was there and I thought the girls battled all weekend. There were a lot of good things to build off of and things to learn from, all things you are looking for from the opening weekend of the season.”
The Spartans would finish the tournament in sixth place out of the 32 teams in attendance Here are their statistical leaders for the weekend:
Alayna Deprez – 67 assists, 30 digs; Erin Cherovsky – 44 assists, 29 digs; Aubrey Frey – 51 kills, 39 digs, 10 aces; Miranda Schmidt – 21 kills, 9 blocks; Ella VanderVelden – 19 kills, 10 blocks; Brooke VandeHei – 64 digs.
LUXEMBURG – The Luxemburg-Casco High girls’ golf team has played in a handful of events so far this season, including a North Eastern Conference meet, hosted by the Spartans at Northbrook on Monday, August 29.
In that meet, Little Chute defeated L-C 225 to 245 while Waupaca defaulted due to only having one varsity golfer available.
Bowie Bredael led the way for the Spartans, shooting a 55 over nine holes; Morgan DeJardin turned in a score of 59; Reese Bandow had a round of 65; Ashley Fameree shot a 66 and Katie Ledvina a 70.
On Friday, Aug. 18, the Spartans were at LIttle River Country Club in Peshtigo, where they finished in second place with a scorecard of 227, just ahead of third place Denmark and behind host team Marinette in first with a score of 212.
Bradel fired a 51 to pace the Spartans; Dejardin turned in a 56; Bandow shot a 60; Ledvina also a 60 and Averi Buresh turned in a card of 65.
LUXEMBURG – The Luxemburg-Casco boys’ soccer squad bounced back from a 4-1 defeat on the road against Waupaca in North Eastern Conference play with a 2-0 win over Algoma at home on Friday, Aug. 25.
In the Waupaca game, L-C’s lone goal came at minute 61 off the foot of Johan Amador, assisted by Ethan Vandenhouten. Quentin Massart had nine saves in goal for the Spartans.
Against Algoma, L-C got its first score at minute 42, unassisted by Amaor. The team’s second score came at minute 70 by Reese Barbiaux, also unassisted.
Massart made two saves to earn the shutout.
