ALGOMA – After more than two decades of dedicated service, Barb Rodgers, the long-standing president of the Algoma District School Board, will be stepping down at the end of March. Rodgers’ decision to retire marks the end of an era of leadership in the community, where she has been an influential figure in shaping education for thousands of students in the Algoma School District.
Rodgers, a longtime advocate for public education, began her tenure on the school board in 2000 when she was appointed. She was then elected in April, 2001, for her first full three-year term. Over the course of 24 years, Rodgers has worked to improve educational opportunities for students in the Algoma School District. Her tenure saw several changes, including the introduction of new technology in classrooms, enhanced community engagement and a continued focus on inclusivity for students of all backgrounds and abilities.
Known by friends and loved ones for her unwavering commitment to educational excellence and her collaborative approach, Rodgers has earned the respect of fellow board members, educators and parents alike. Under her leadership, the school board has been able to navigate numerous challenges, including fluctuating funding levels and the evolving needs of students in the digital age.
Rodgers has also been a strong proponent of seeking ways for the entire community to benefit from the Algoma School District. This included the creation of the Wellness Center, advocating for the creation of the charter school, Algoma Venture Academy (AVA) and leading multiple referendums that successfully passed over the years.
As Rodgers prepares to retire, the Algoma District School Board is left with big shoes to fill. The board has expressed deep gratitude for her years of service and leadership, recognizing the profound impact she has had on the educational community.
Rodgers’ retirement will be effective once newly elected board members take the oath of office in April. The Algoma School Board will elect a new president at the reorganizational meeting on April 28, 2025.
The board meeting on Monday, March 17 will also be Chris Schley’s last meeting. Schley joined the Algoma school board in 2022 when he ran for his first term. He has since served as the district’s clerk for the past two years.
