Program on abandoned children in early 1900s part of historical society meeting

The Kewaunee County Historical Society brings guest speaker Don Youniss to give a program on homeless and abandoned children around the turn of the 20th century during the society's annual meting on April 14. The public is invited to attend.

Youniss will revisit a time when children were taken by train to the western United States to fill a need of finding homes for abandoned children.  The early 1900s were not an easy time for a homeless child left alone on the streets of New York, in some instances unable to understand the language.  Youniss will relive the times with powerful pictures and stories.

The society also will announce its Volunteer of the Year at the meeting. Attendees can meet the board of directors and learn about the organization's future plans. A social, light lunch and refreshments will be held.
