Promoter still wanted at Luxemburg Speedway

LUXEMBURG - No one submitted a proposal to promote auto races at Luxemburg Speedway in 2019 before the Nov. 13 deadline, but that doesn't mean racing is dead at the track.

A request for proposals, or RFP, was issued by Kewaunee County in October for those interested in becoming promoters of the third-mile clay oval on the county fairgrounds. 

While no official proposal was returned, one group did contact the county to express interest in operating the track next year, County Administrator Scott Feldt and Promotion & Recreation Director David Myers both said.

"There were plenty of other people who asked about it, but nobody stepped forward with a proposal yet," said Myers, whose department oversees the fairgrounds.

Myers said county officials are working to meet with the interested group within the next week or two to discuss the group's ideas in detail. He said if both sides are still interested in working together after the meeting, the group will be asked to fill out the RFP and submit it to the county for review.

If the county or group decide to not follow through, it's possible the county could issue another RFP for the track.

Luxemburg Speedway opened in the 1960s and ran weekly stock car and modified races each year from about May to September until 1982, when a downturn in local dirt-track racing saw the track close. It reopened in 1987 and has hosted racing every summer since. 

Weather seriously affected the track in 2018, with six of a scheduled 13 race nights rained out. The Wisconsin Fall Nationals, a special postseason show scheduled for Sept. 14 and 15, also was canceled.
