Luxemburg-Casco packed the gymnasium for its annual Pink Out cancer fundraiser, falling to the sixth-ranked team in Div. 1, Neenah, in a close match.
The Spartans won the first set 25-23 before falling in three straight, 21-25, 20-25 and 22-25.
“Those are the kind of teams we want to play late in the year, because we know we’re not going to see a lot of those teams of that quality come tournament time,” said L-C coach Jeff Frey. “We competed and played well, and there’s a lot of stuff to build off of tonight.”
Neenah improved to 19-4, while the Spartans — the state’s seventh-ranked Div. 2 team — fell to 14-12 while leading the North Eastern Conference with a 5-0 mark.
“This weekend we’ll be going to (Neenah’s) tournament, and we’ll be playing No. 2 (in Div. 1) Oconomowoc,” Frey said. “We don’t shy away from great teams. We’re nobody’s underdog. I’m proud of the way these girls competed tonight.”
One of the biggest winners on the night was Ribbon of Hope, with thousands of dollars raised from T-shirt sales, bucket raffles, business sponsorships and a 50/50 raffle. Beth Budnick even donated back more than $600 she won on the 50/50. Ribbon of Hope provides direct financial and personal support to local community members undergoing cancer treatments.
