Road construction on State 29 in Kewaunee County is expected to run to July

Traffic on State 29 through almost all of Kewaunee County could be impacted for two to three months by a resurfacing project starting Monday.

The road work will cover 11.7 miles of the highway from the Brown County line in the Town of Montpelier to its intersection with County C at the Town of West Kewaunee/City of Kewaunee line. The Wisconsin Department of Public Transportation said in a press release construction is expected to be completed by July.

State 29 is scheduled to remain open during construction, but lanes occasionally will need to close and flagpersons will control traffic in those stretches. Access to side roads and adjacent properties will be maintained. In the press release, the DOT asked motorists to slow down, be patient and pay attention to their surroundings in work zones.

The project involves milling and resurfacing the existing asphalt lanes and shoulders; widening paved shoulders to 5 feet; installing centerline and shoulder rumble strips; adding gravel to existing shoulders; replacing culvert pipes; upgrading guardrails; and adding permanent signage and pavement markings.

The DOT said it's performing the work because the existing pavement surface is deteriorating. The improvements will reduce surface roughness, provide a smoother and safer ride for motorists, and extend the life of the pavement while reducing future maintenance costs. Also, the rumble strips and wider paved shoulders improve driver safety, and repair and replacement of the culverts can improve drainage to mitigate possible flooding.

The cost of the project is $3.94 million, and Northeast Asphalt, Inc. of Greenville is the prime contractor. For more information, visit the DOT's projects website at projects.511wi.gov/region/northeast.
