It was 15 up, 15 down Friday and 21 up, 21 down Saturday as seniors Macie Zimmerman of Algoma and Brett Paulsen of Kewaunee each pitched perfect games last weekend.
Zimmerman struck out 11 Gibraltar batters in a season-opening 18-0 shutout at Peterson Park. She threw just 64 pitches in the five-inning game.
Paulsen struck out 19 of the 21 batters he faced on just 96 pitches in a 9-0 win over Escanaba Saturday. He also had two hits, two RBIs, two stolen bases and a run scored. Dane Harrell went 3-for-3 with four runs batted in, including a two-run double.
Bristol Schmidt and McKenzie Lischka each had two hits in the Wolves season opener, with Schmidt and Ella Severinsen getting doubles. Severinsen, Natalie Ray, Emma DeMeuse and Madison Schneider each had two RBI, and Zimmerman walked three times.
In game two, Lischka had three hits, including a double, and three RBI, in an 18-2 win. She struck out eight and walked three while allowing just two hits and no earned runs in five innings. Ray and Lischka each had three hits, and DeMeuse had a solo home run. Lischka and Severinsen each had three RBI.
Those are just a few of the past week’s sports headlines. Let’s take a closer look at some more highlights.
Nate Chervenka gave up just one hit in four innings, striking out five and walking three in the Spartans’ 9-1 boys baseball win over St. Mary Catholic Thursday. Ethan Engum threw three innings of zero-run ball in relief, giving up just one hit and a walk while striking out five.
Myles Jandrin and Ethan Werner each had two hits. Jandrin and Tatum Klaubauf each had two RBI.
On Monday, L-C’s Hudson Billings and Brayden Radart combined for a shutout in an 8-0 win over Sturgeon Bay. Billings got the W, giving up two hits and no runs over six innings, with six strikeouts and two walks. Radart struck out two and allowed no hits in relief.
Noah Chervenka had a pair of hits and Billings two RBI for the Spartans.
On the softball side, the Spartan girls beat Waupaca 9-1 last Thursday. Rylan Kaminski’s three-run double in the fifth was the biggest blow. Jasmine Jandrin got the win, giving up two hits and striking out two over the final three innings.
Earlier, L-C’s Baylee Wypiszenski struck out five and allowed just four hits and two runs over five innings in a win over Oconto Falls. Gracie Jandrin and Riley Westland each drove in three runs. Westland, Kaminski and Stella Schleis each had a pair of hits.
Emi Kuhn scored the team’s lone goal in a 1-0 girls soccer shutout at Seymour last week. Teagan Gunderson had four saves.
The Storm softball team beat Cumberland 15-1 Friday and Prairie du Chien (14-4) and Brillion (7-3) Saturday.
Kambreia Last had four hits and Summer Walechka three in the first game, Breanna Riha four RBI in game two and Last three hits and two RBI vs. Brillion. Ali Repitz was the winning pitcher in all three.
A day earlier, Kewaunee swept NEW Lutheran, 10-0 and 22-2. Breanna Riha had three hits, including a double, and Repitz had two doubles and three RBI in game one. Last and Braelyn Chevalier each homered in game two, and Vivian Bootz had two doubles. Chevalier had five RBI, Last four and Bootz and Riha each three.
Repitz threw a five-inning shutout in the first game, giving up five hits while striking out nine, with no walks. Riha one-hit the Blazers in game two, striking out seven in four innings.
On Monday, the Storm loss to Two Rivers on a walk-off single in the ninth inning, 5-4. Bootz, Last, Repitz and Cora Schleis each had two hits. Riha took the loss on the mound, allowing one run on two hits with three walks and one strikeout over the final 3-2/3 innings.
The Wolves baseball team lost a doubleheader on a cold, windy Saturday at Perry Field, falling to Gibraltar 3-1 and 10-9.
Jacob Massey went 5-2/3 innings in the opener, allowing only two hits while striking out 13. Charlie Prokash went five innings in game two, giving up two hits and one earned run while striking out six. He had two wild pitches and one walk.
Alex Gonzalez had two of Algoma’s six hits.
Braeden Leist had three hits and Jonah Dahms two in the second game. The Wolves scored six runs in the top of the seventh, including three on a double by Dahms, to take a 9-3 lead. The Vikings got hot against two pitchers in the bottom of the seventh to scored seven runs in the walk-off win.
On Monday, Algoma fell to Mishicot, 9-1. Gonzalez had two hits for the Wolves.
