Sheriff: Pokeman Go creates dangers for players

I know that in the past I have written articles in relation to the law of trespassing and the courtesies that should be extended if one wishes to enter another’s property. These articles have traditionally been focused around the deer season activities, or other hunting related seasons and activities.  Recently a new fad has taken hold throughout our country and we will most likely see its presence here in our county as well.

The issue I am speaking of is called Pokemon Go, and it is a video game which can be downloaded to smart phones.  The game merges a popular game from a few years back with the technology of Google maps, creating what is known as an augmented reality.

Now you are probably thinking why are you mixing trespassing with the advent of a new game? The issue that has arisen in many communities is that this game takes the user on a virtual scavenger hunt looking for the various characters in the game, regardless of what is actually going on around them including property boundaries.

While the intentions of these gamers may not be malicious or criminal in manner, the fact is that their focus is primarily on success in the augmented reality rather than consideration for their actions in actual reality. There have been complaints of individuals walking onto secured government property, private property and most alarming walking across streets with little awareness of the activity and dangers around them.

We have seen similar behavior related to people’s addiction to texting on their electronic devices and walking directly into traffic resulting in needless tragedy. The startling nature of this game is the extent to which it has caught on and the focus it requires while on the move.

If you are one of these individuals who are captured by the popularity of this game, please remember you are still responsible for what you do and where you go. For the rest of us who continue to live in the world of reality, be aware that this fad is out there and until it passes into obscurity, be cautious for those you see walking on or near roadways, for their focus may not be where it should.
