Sheriff's column: The good, bad of Christmas giving

Although we continue to experience weather more fitting to Halloween or Thanksgiving, the Christmas season is upon us with all it brings in the form of traditions and celebrations. Two weeks ago officers from Kewaunee County once again held our annual “Shop with a Cop” program and it was a great success.  A big thanks to all who helped and donated to this wonderful event.

Whether it be the Shop with a Cop program,  ringing bells for the Salvation Army, contributing to a giving tree, or the Marine Corp Toys for Tots program, I do honestly feel that these opportunities of giving do make the season more special, not just for those who receive, but also for those who give.

Unfortunately there are those who will use this season to extort money from the kind hearts of many, and I wanted to take a moment to warn against falling into some seasonal scams. Always be suspicious of phone-based or Internet-based solicitations.  While some may be legitimate, these formats allow for the solicitation of funds with very little accountability.

Some of these scams will even use legitimate fronts and organizations to gain credibility. As with any request for money, a little research goes a long way. A quick phone call to the local chapter of a national charitable organization can assist in verifying that the money you send will make it to the intended cause.

Just as shopping local is always best, so it is with charities as well. We are very fortunate to have the many local organizations who make it their mission to reach out to those in need, not just during the holiday season, but all year long as well. I do hope that everyone has a safe and happy Christmas season.
