The Algoma Penguins defeated the Sheboygan Braves 8-1 on June 4 in the 'Guins Shoreland League opener at Peterson Field.
Nick Kita got the win for Algoma, surrendering only two hits while striking out eight. Losing pitcher Tyler Ebbers gave up only two earned runs and recorded 14 strikeouts, but he walked seven and suffered from four Braves errors.
Shoreland teams have played a handful of games since May 14, with league play starting to heat up this week. This year the league has split into North and South divisions, with the three Kewaunee County teams – Algoma (1-0), Kewaunee (1-2) and defending regular-season champion Casco (0-1) sharing the North with Branch and Little Chute. The South Division is comprised of defending grand champion Two Rivers, Sheboygan, Denmark, Howards Grove and Manitowoc.
Each team plays a 13-game regular league schedule through July 31, and a four-team playoff is scheduled for early August to determine the grand champion.
This week's schedule:
June 8: Branch at Casco, Denmark at Kewaunee.
June 9: Algoma at Little Chute.
June 10: Algoma at Howards Grove, Branch at Denmark, Manitowoc at Two Rivers.
June 12: Two Rivers at Sheboygan, 2 p.m.; Howards Grove at Branch, 2 p.m.
June 14: Little Chute at Two Rivers.
