ALGOMA – Despite weaker winds, Saturday’s Soar on the Shore festival still brought color to the skies of Crescent Beach — and the shores, too, with performers and vendors packing the boardwalk. Local businesses and clubs took advantage of the beautiful day to connect with the community with games, activities, food and live demonstrations.
The Algoma School District’s Destination Imagination team was in attendance, selling roasted corn to raise money for future competitions. Friends of Crescent Beach, a Lakeshore Natural Resource Partnership partner which champions conservation of Crescent Beach, and Save the Algoma Catwalk, a subcommittee of Community Improvement of Algoma dedicated to preserving the Algoma Catwalk, also took the opportunity to spread the word about their missions.
A variety of performers were in attendance, from professional kiters clubs like Fire & Ice and Three Sheets, and solo fliers like Bob Turicik of Kite Eye View Photography, to entertainers like the band Hunter Gatherer and performer Jess Clark of Elemental Aerial Arts.
Ultimately, no light-up kites were able to take to the skies on Friday night due to insufficient wind, but the festival was an undeniable success, drawing huge crowds and offering something for just about everyone.
