Soar on the Shore returns to Crescent Beach with kites, family fun and new festival features

Posted

ALGOMA – The skies above Lake Michigan will come alive with color on Saturday, August 22, as the 12th annual Soar on the Shore Kite & Beach Festival returns to Algoma’s Crescent Beach. Hosted by Friends of Crescent Beach and the Algoma Area Chamber of Commerce, the free festival will run 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. with kites, family activities, local food and plenty of beachside fun for all ages.

The Wisconsin Kiters Club will fill the sky with stunt kites, giant display kites and the crowd-favorite candy drop, weather and wind permitting. Professional teams Fire & Ice and Three Sheets will perform choreographed routines set to music. Visitors can also bring their own kites or purchase one from Route 66 Kites and fly in the designated public flying area.

New this year

Soar on the Shore will feature several new experiences this year, including Jess from Elemental Aerial Arts, who will be taking to the beach as a stilt walker.

Families can also enjoy crafts with ArtBeet, Inc., balloon creations and face painting from Mischief and Magic sponsored by Fox Communities Credit Union, bubbles with the Algoma Public Library, a spinner maze, plein air easels, the Algoma Public Library Boardwalk Story and a firetruck from the Algoma Fire Department.

Celebrate Crescent Beach

The festival also highlights the natural resources and organizations that help make Crescent Beach a special place. Visitors can explore hands-on activities and information from Glacierland RC&D, Algoma Venture Academy and the Ice Age Trail Alliance. Algoma’s woolly mammoth mascot may even make an appearance.

The Door County Maritime Museum will showcase a hand-built wooden boat, while Discover Green Bay will share ideas for outdoor exploration throughout the region.

Food and fundraising

Festivalgoers can enjoy returning favorites including the Algoma Lions Club and Steel Belly Barbeque, along with Los Magueyes Food Truck, The Bubbler Bar serving dirty sodas and Sweet Escapes Ice Cream Truck.

Several local organizations will also be raising funds through food sales. Destination Imagination will offer boiled sweet corn and dessert treats, while Lakeshore Singers will sell baked goods and Save the Catwalk will serve root beer floats — giving visitors another way to support local causes while enjoying the festival.

Friday night kites

While organizers can’t guarantee that kiters will arrive early, some may be in town and take advantage of the evening wind conditions.

Plan your visit

Soar on the Shore is free and open to everyone. Street parking is available throughout Algoma, with designated handicap parking near Legion Park. A drop-off and pick-up zone will be located at the north end of the festival near Fremont and Lake/Second Streets. A water refill station will be available at the Friends of Crescent Beach booth.

Kite flying and some activities are weather and wind dependent. There is no rain date. The festival will take place Saturday, weather permitting. Updates will be shared if weather conditions affect activities.
