Spartans clobber Bulldogs

LUXEMBURG – The Luxemburg-Casco High football team scored early and often on Friday in its week three matchup against New London.

With the defense serving up a shutout and giving the offense great field position to start nearly every drive, the Spartans went wild on the visiting Bulldogs and cruised to a 48-0 victory, improving to 2-1 for the year.

L-C, coming off a hard-fought 31-22 loss on the road to Kewaunee in week two, wasted no time setting the tone on both sides of the ball against New London. 

The Spartans defense opened the game by forcing the Bulldogs to punt it away on a three and out, turning it over to the offense for a methodical march down the field on its first possession.

Beginning at their own 44, the Spartans got into enemy territory when quarterback Max Ronsman hit Trace Schoenebeck with a pass that got the team down to the New London 28. Up next, Samuel Schutz ran the ball straight up the middle for a nice gain down to the six.

On the next play, Ronsman faked a handoff and ran it in himself to light up the scoreboard for the first time of the evening.

The Bulldogs were moving the ball pretty well on their ensuing possession. New London’s efficient offense got into the red zone and was looking to score but L-C’s Schutz made a big play in the end zone to defend a pass that looked to be on target and would have tied the game. The Bulldogs would come away empty handed on the drive after going for it on fourth down only to be denied by the L-C defense.

The Spartans got the ball back and went to work with their ground game.

Schutz reeled off a nice run for a first down early in the drive and on the following play, sophomore running back Cameron Dorner found the edge on the right side and broke off a 56-yard run all the way to the end zone.

“I was feeling it, sort of expecting it,” Dorner said after the game. “I knew I was going to break one. The line did great tonight. They were opening eight-foot gaps. I just had to run through them.”

After another hold by the L-C defense, Dorner and the Spartans’ line did it again as the sophomore turned a running play on second down into a 33-yard trip across the goal line, capping the scoring for the first half with the score 21-0.

Things went from bad to worse for the Bulldogs right away in the third quarter as Ronsman connected with Sawyer Dorn on a pass that went 75 yards to make the score 28-0 and take the bite out of the Bulldogs.

“(New London) made some plays on us early but I thought the guys did a good job making adjustments.” said Spartans head coach Neil Seering, who is celebrating his birthday this weekend. “Our offense made some ig plays tonight, put together some good drives. We’ve still got some things to work on but I thought they did a better job tonight overall. This was a good win for us coming off last week.”

Editor’s note: The Kewaunee Storm moved to 3-0 on the season with a 43-6 road victory over Marinette and the Algoma Wolves played their first game of the year, grinding out a gritty 46-44 win in Wausaukee.
